Several lawmakers and concerned citizens will lodge "very soon" another petition asking the Supreme Court to strike down the new Anti-Terrorism Act as unconstitutional, rights lawyer Chel Diokno said Monday.

The legislation replacing the Human Security Act of 2007 allows suspects to be detained for up to 24 days without charge. Critics said the law also strips away old safeguards such as penalties for wrongful detention.

"There are many contentious provisions in that act... Our approach is perhaps going to be a bit different from the other petitions," said Diokno, founding dean of the De La Salle University College of Law. He declined to give additional details.

There are at least 8 petitions lodged against the law that takes effect on Saturday.
