Pinoy Pride: Carlos Yulo
Filipino gymnast Carlos "Caloy" Yulo made the country proud recently after he won the gold medal in the floor exercises in the World Artistic Gymnastics in Stuttgart, Germany. He defeated two taller and older opponents from Israel and China.
He is the first Filipino world gymnastics champion, and he may yet be able to deliver the Philippines' first Olympic gold in next year's summer games in Tokyo.
Yulo did it through sheer determination, hard work, and discipline. He trains 5 hours a day in Japan, says his Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya.
This 19-year-old athlete, the youngest competitor in his event in Germany, symbolizes what the Filipino is capable of doing in the world stage given the right attitude, proper training and support.
His humble beginnings make his victory all the more impressive and indelible.
