MANILA - San Miguel point guard Chris Ross was full of praise for Letran's Fran Yu after he watched the diminutive floor general steer the Knights to a cardiac win over San Beda in Game 3 of the NCAA Season 95 Finals.
Ross was among the nearly 20,000 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday who watched as Yu battled cramps in the end game to make the free throws that iced the Knights' 81-79 triumph.
Yu eventually earned Finals MVP honors after averaging 13.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in the three-game series. In their title-clinching win, Yu put up 9 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in a solid all-around effort.
"Fran did an amazing job dictating the tempo and running the team," Ross said of Yu. "He played a great game and ran the team like a true point guard."
Yu has made no secret that he idolizes Ross, the veteran San Miguel point guard who made a name for himself as a no-nonsense, defense-first player.
The two met at the MOA Arena court after Letran's triumph, and Yu could only shake his head afterward after the experience.
"Wala, idol ko pa rin talaga siya," he said.
"Idol ko 'yan, kasi balewala sa kanya 'yung score," Yu explained. "Dedepensa, tapos pasa, rebound. Lahat ng small things, na pag pinagsama-sama niya, nagiging malaki."
"Balewala talaga 'yung score, kaya sobrang idol."
It's fair to say that the admiration is now mutual.
"I want one of his jerseys," Ross said of Yu. "Maybe we can swap jerseys soon."
