MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) The San Beda University Red Cubs are back as the kings of high school basketball in the NCAA, after a dominant 98-77 triumph over Lyceum of the Philippines University in Game 3 of the Season 95 juniors finals, Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Four players scored in double-digits for San Beda, led by Justin Sanchez who had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting along with 7 rebounds. Rhayyan Amsali had 16 points and 11 boards, while Jay Ynot set the tone for the Red Cubs in the first half and finished with 18 markers.
Cyrus Llarena had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 stals for the Red Cubs, who had a massive 52-39 rebounding edge over the Junior Pirates.
This is San Beda's 23rd high school championship, the most in the history of the league. It was also their first title since the 2015 season.
The Red Cubs were in control of the game the whole way, with Ynot scoring 14 points in the first half to steer them to a 50-33 halftime edge.
They piled it on in the second half, as the lead stretched to 30 points, 79-49, late in the third quarter.
Amsali later emerged as Finals MVP.
McLaude Guadaña did his best to carry the Junior Pirates, scoring 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. But he also committed 7 of their 23 turnovers, which the Red Cubs turned to 21 points.
Season 95 MVP John Barba, the hero of their 79-74 triumph in Game 2, was limited to just 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
It is still the best finish for the Junior Pirates, who were making their first finals appearance.
