MANILA - (UPDATED) The National University (NU) Pep Squad affirmed its status as a cheerdance powerhouse by coming up with one of the most dominant performances in UAAP Season 82 Cheerdance Competition at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.

This year saw vast improvements from all the squads, but the cheerdancers from NU proved once more that they are a cut above the rest, by performing one difficult stunt after another in their awe-inspiring routine.

NU's Pinoy Pride theme earned back-to-back titles for the school -- its sixth in the past seven editions of the cheerdance competition.

The NU Pep Squad also won the best toss and the best pyramid awards.

With the victory, NU took home the P50,000 top prize, aside from the cash prizes that came with the special awards.

NU's cheerdance coach Ghika Bernabe said the routine is about paying tribute to their fellow Filipinos. "It's about giving back to the Filipino supporters," she said.

She also praised her wards for being coachable, down-to earth and passionate about their craft. These attributes, she said, were the reasons NU has won its sixth cheerdance title.

"Very skillful. Hindi nilalagay sa ulo nila, nandito sa puso nila," said Bernabe.

Finishing in second place was Far Eastern University with their Michael Jackson-themed routine, while Adamson University came in third -- in a repeat of last season's final ranking.

NU amassed a total of 722 points, while FEU got 706 points. Adamson had a total score of 658.5 points.

FEU received 30,000 for its efforts, while Adamson settled for P15,000.

University of Santo Tomas again finished at fourth place, followed by University of the East, University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University.

Paula de la Llana-Nunag, Cheerdance head judge, said that a lot has changed in the competition through the years, citing that the judging process has become increasingly difficult due to the vast improvements made by each of respective schools.

“This year was really, really special... This was the year where the competition was really tough. Everybody really leveled up,” she said.
