If everything goes as planned, Eumir Marcial might end up training with the same guy that made Manny Pacquiao a legend.
The new recruit of Pacquiao's MP Promotion will likely head to the US in October, said promotions chief Sean Gibbons, who plans to link Marcial up with esteemed boxing training Freddie Roach.
"I’m thinking of trying him out with Freddie at Wild Card in LA, Mark (Magsayo) is working out with Freddie and Justin (Fortune)," said Gibbons in PhilBoxing.com.
Marcial signed a 6-year deal with MP Promotions which promised to help him achieve his Olympic dreams.
He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in March, ruling the middleweight division in the Asia and Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament in Amman, Jordan. He has also won three gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games, and a bronze at the Asian Games in 2018.
Marcial has said he wishes to keep working with his coaches at the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP), the sport's national governing body, even as a pro fighter.
But Gibbons said he only wanted Roach to have a look at Marcial.
"Freddie knows Filipinos and southpaws. I’d like Eumir to give it a shot with Freddie. Let’s see how they connect. Again, it’ll be up to Eumir whom he works with,” the veteran matchmaker said.
Gibbons said Marcial is just a natural fit for MP Promotions, founded by Pacquiao, who is considered a "national treasure."
“I couldn’t think of Eumir signing up with somebody else,” he said. “That would be a national embarrassment."
