MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Colegio de San Juan de Letran's shaky build-up to the NCAA Season 93 tournament was dealt another blow when star guard Rey Nambatac suffered an injury that will rule him out for the rest of the pre-season.
Nambatac said on Tuesday that he has a hyperextended left knee, an injury he suffered during the Knights' practice.
"Out ako for the rest of the preseason," he said.
Nambatac said he will need at least two weeks to heal, but will try to return to Letran's practices by next week.
The former NCAA juniors MVP is averaging 23.7 points per game in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament. The Knights won their first game of the preseason tilt on Tuesday, escaping University of Santo Tomas, 89-81, in overtime with Nambatac watching from the sidelines.
Letran coach Jeff Napa confirmed that Nambatac will sit out the rest of the tournament.
"(NCAA) season na lang ang iintayin namin," he said. "Kumbaga, ayaw na namin i-risk kung ano ang nararamdaman niya ngayon. At least, mas maganda na pagdating ng season, healthy na ulit siya."
The new NCAA season opens on July 8.
