MANILA, Philippines -- Three Filipino golfers continue to work on their rankings with hopes of making the cut for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Miguel Tabuena’s solid performance in the recent SMBC Singapore Open sent him safely in the cut-off in the men’s global rankings for another possible trip to the Summer Games.
Female golfers Yuka Saso and Dottie Ardina also made it into the top 60 in the women’s rankings and temporarily secured their position going into the final stretch of the qualifiers.
Only the best 60 golfers in the men’s and women’s divisions at the end of June will be allowed to march their way to Tokyo on July 24-August 9.
Tabuena, the lone Pinoy qualifier in golf during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, is clinging on at No. 59 in the rankings.
Reigning Asian Games women’s champion Saso is ranked No. 50, followed by Ardina, a regular in the LPGA Tour, at No. 51.
Saso and Ardina should continue playing in the world golfing circuit along with Tabuena to retain their current rankings or even improve their positions for a solid Olympic bid.
National Golf Association of the Philippines secretary general Bones Floro said the 3 golfers, all based overseas, will play in several more tournaments over the next 3 months.
So far, only pole vaulter EJ Obiena and gymnast Carlos Yulo have secured berths to the Olympics.
There are at least 60 more Filipino athletes who are looking to join them, including the national boxers who are currently competing in qualifiers in Jordan.
