MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas received a glowing review from Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone after its first game of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers against Indonesia last Sunday.

Cone, who coached the Philippines to a basketball gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games last December, was especially impressed with what he saw from the younger members of the team.

"Great win for Gilas," Cone tweeted on Monday afternoon. "Young guns really carried the fight."

The Philippines blasted Indonesia, 100-70, at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta, breaking the game open in the second half after a slow start. The 30-point triumph gave them a 1-0 record in Group A after the first window of the qualifiers.

Cone reserved special praise for Thirdy Ravena, who led the team with 23 points and 8 rebounds off the bench, and was unstoppable for most of the game.

"Wow, Thirdy!!" the coach tweeted.

"Well played, well-coached. Hats off," he added. "Future looks good for Gilas!"

Aside from Ravena, also shining for Gilas Pilipinas was Roger Pogoy, who had 16 points in the contest, while making 7 of his 11 shots.

The other amateurs in the team also shone, with Juan Gomez de Liano putting up 10 points, and Matt Nieto dishing out a team-high 6 assists.

The national team returns to action in November, with a pair of games against Thailand and South Korea.
