MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion Arellano University racked up its second win in a row by trouncing Mapua University, 25-12, 25-20, 25-12, in the NCAA Season 95 women's volleyball tournament on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Regine Arocha led the way once again for the Lady Chiefs, putting up 19 points on 17 kills, an ace and a block, while adding 7 receptions. Carla Donato and Princess Bello each added 7 points.
It took the three-time defending champions just an hour and 12 minutes to dismiss the Lady Cardinals, who managed just 24 attack points to Arellano's 47.
Jonina Fernandez led Mapua with 10 points.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University (JRU) started its campaign with a hard-earned five-set win over San Sebastian College.
Four players scored in double-digits for JRU in their 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8 triumph over the Lady Stags.
Dolly Verzosa put up 21 points on 16 kills and 3 aces, while Sydney Niegos (13), Riza Rose (12) and Renesa Melgar (11) also contributed on offense. JRU, as a team, registered 14 kill blocks, with Niegos accounting for five.
"Bata pa ang mga teammates ko so kailangan kong mag-step up. As a captain, kailangang maging matured ako," said Verzosa.
Shannai Requierme led the Lady Stags with 17 points, 18 digs and 11 receptions, while Kamille Tan added 15 points.
In the men's division, June Laxina had 12 points while Lester Villaceran chipped in 11 hits as JRU kicked off its campaign on a high note with a 25-14, 27-25, 25-14 conquest of San Sebastian.
The Staglets, behind Jessie Rubin's 16 points, turned back the Light Bombers, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22, for their first juniors win.
