MANILA - An African woman who attempted to leave the country using a fake Canadian passport was nabbed by airport authorities earlier this month, the Bureau of Immigration said Friday.

The 31-year-ol Eritrean woman identified as Safae Hazot Medin Omran tried to board a flight at the Mactan International Airport in Cebu, the BI said in a statement.

She was intercepted by authorities and barred from leaving before she could board an Eva Airways flight bound for a stopover in Taipei before flying to her final destination in Vancouver, Canada.

“She initially insisted that she is a Canadian citizen despite irregularities, discrepancies and signs of alterations on her Canadian passport," BI port operations chief Grifton Medina said.

"She also could not present any other identification document to prove her Canadian citizenship,” he said.

The woman later admitted her true nationality by presenting her Eritrean passport that was hidden in her luggage, Medina reported.

"She claimed that she procured her Canadian passport for 18,000 Saudi Riyals in Riyadh and that she knew very well that the travel document she had used was fraudulent," he said.

Omran is detained at the BI detention facility in Bicutan in Taguig while authorities are preparing the cases that will be filed against her.
