5.6-magnitude quake hits Davao Occidental

MANILA (UPDATE) — A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Davao Occidental Thursday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It was downgraded from magnitude 5.7, as was earlier reported by the Phivolcs.

The tectonic tremor occurred at 8:24 p.m. some 49 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos town. It had a depth of 54 kilometers.

Intensity 3, described by Phivolcs as "weak," was recorded in Glan, Malapatan and Alabel, Sarangani.

Intensity 2 was also felt in General Santos City; Koronadal City and Tampakan, South Cotabato.

Instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:

Intensity IV - Malungon, Sarangani
Intensty II - General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotabato; Kiamba, Sarangani
Intensity I - Gingoog City

Phivolcs said the quake would not cause damage but aftershocks are expected.

In October, a string of powerful temblors struck Mindanao, leaving several dead, hundreds hurt and structures destroyed and damaged.
