MANILA — Two Maute terrorists and their 2 supporters surrendered to the military in Masiu, Lanao Del Sur on Wednesday, some 2 years after the Islamic State-inspired group laid siege to the neighboring city of Marawi.

Carrying a rifle, gun and bullets, the 4 Maute fighters first turned themselves in to barangay officials, who brought them to the army's 49th Infantry Battalion.

The group will undergo tactical interrogation and debriefing. They may be released once authorities confirm they are not facing any case, the military said.

"We are delighted by their decision to return to the mainstream of society instead of engaging in armed confrontations," said Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

The 5-month siege that left Marawi in ruins in 2017 prompted the declaration of martial law over the whole of Mindanao until the end of this year.
