MANILA - Cutting off public access around the perimeter of New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) would help stop the proliferation of contraband inside prison facilities, Senator Ronald Dela Rosa said on Tuesday.
"Kung hindi ma-stop access ng mga tao d'yan walang mangyari d'yan," Dela Rosa said on ANC's Headstart.
Dela Rosa said the facility, particularly the maximum security compound, is near a civilian community area.
"Saan ka ba makakita ng maximum security compound 'yung gilid ng wall daan ng motorista at pedestrians? Sabi ko nga hagis mo lang nandoon na sa loob 'yung kontrabando," stressed the former Bureau of Corrections chief.
Newly appointed Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald Bantag recently led the destruction of thousands of illegal items seized from inmates at the state penitentiary.
Bantag wants to create an ad hoc group that would rid his agency of corruption and prevent the further smuggling of contraband into the prison.
Dela Rosa said securing the facility's surroundings is a start.
"Kung hindi malipat 'yan (facility) dahil wala nga tayong pera, ipagbawal lang yung mga tao sa paligid ng maximum, security compound, medium at minimum...dapat walang tao sa palibot," he said.
