MANILA—Scattered rains will persist in parts of the country on Thursday due to tropical storm Quiel, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

The weather disturbance was last spotted 400 kilometers west-northwest of Coron, Palawan, weather specialist Lorie Dela Cruz said.

Quiel is packing 85 kilometers per hour (kph) winds near the center and gusts of up to 105 kph.

The tropical storm, which remains almost stationary, may intensify into a severe tropical storm within 24 hours.

The effects of Quiel and the tail-end of a cold front or the interaction of cold air and warm air in the Pacific Ocean will bring scattered rains over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, Zambales, Bataan, Palawan and Mindoro provinces.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have fair weather with chances of isolated rains due to localized thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, PAGASA is also keeping tabs on a typhoon with international name Halong.

The typhoon was last spotted 2,990 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon, packing 185 kph winds near the center and gusts of up to 230 kph.

Halong is not expected to enter the country, Dela Cruz added.
