BORACAY, Aklan (UPDATE)—A tourist drowned in Boracay after he was swept by large waves on Thursday afternoon.
The fatality was identified as Roberto Baisas, 50, of Sta. Cruz, Laguna.
Another tourist, 20-year-old James Alfararo of Cebu City, nearly drowned.
According to responders, other beachgoers who saw them go under quickly asked for help. Rescuers immediately worked to resuscitate both victims.
The 2 men were sent to a nearby hospital, but Baisas was declared dead upon arrival, said Catherine Ong of Malay's Disaster Risk Reduction Management.
Alfararo is recuperating in the hospital.
The large waves, Ong said, were brought about by severe tropical storm Quiel.—Report from Cherry Palma, ABS-CBN News
