MANILA (UPDATED) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday afternoon raised to magnitude 5 the earthquake that struck Batangas, saying that several small aftershocks may be felt in some areas.
The tremor happened 9 kilometers southwest of Mabini at 1:25 in the afternoon, according to Phivolcs.
State seismologists added it was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 2 kilometers.
An aftershock of magnitude 2.3 was already recorded around 1:27 in Mabini, Phivolcs said in an interview on Teleradyo.
"Inaasahan po ang mga maliliit na aftershocks after ng lindol na ito... Maliliit na lang po ang mare-record natin. Pinapayuhan lang po natin ang ating mga kababayan na maging alerto sa mga sitwasyon na ito," Phivolcs' Karen Garcia said.
(We are expecting small aftershocks after this earthquake. We urge everyone to remain alert during these types of situation.)
According to Phivolcs' latest bulletin, intensity 4 was felt in Mabini, San Luis, Lemery, Rosario, Agoncillo, Calatagan, Balayan, Bauan, Sta. Teresita in Batangas, Tagaytay City, Alfonso and Amadeo, Cavite.
Intensity 3, meanwhile, was felt in Batangas City, Malvar, Talisay, Tanauan, Alitagtag, San Pablo, and Laguna.
Areas in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, Navotas City, Majayjay in Laguna and Dolores in Quezon experienced Intensity 2. Intensity 1 was felt in Malabon City, Pasay City, Talisay in Batangas, and Sta. Cruz in Laguna.
The tremor, meanwhile, was not expected to cause damage, Philvolcs added.
