MANILA - The Philippine National Police said Tuesday that it has built satellite offices near casinos and offshore gaming hubs, following an increase in the number of Chinese nationals arrested for abductions related to gambling.

Forty Chinese nationals were arrested for casino-linked kidnapping from January 1 to August 18, up from 17 last year, said the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group.

Sixteen Chinese fell victim to this crime in the first 8 months of this year, just a little below the 17 Chinese nationals abducted last year, added the police unit.

"Nagkaroon na po tayo ng advanced satellite office sa mga malalapit sa mga casino na ito. Nag-deploy na rin tayo ng intelligence operatives," said AKG spokesperson Lt. Col. Elmer Cereno.

(We already have an advanced satellite offices near casinos. We also deployed intelligence cooperatives.)

The PNP will also coordinate with its international counterparts and management of casinos, he said.

There are roughly 138,000 Chinese workers in Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO), according to the initial estimate of an inter-agency task force reviewing the Internet-based business.

Beijing earlier urged Manila to crack down on casinos and offshore gaming firms that illegally employ its nationals.
