MANILA - At least 37 suspected drug users and peddlers were arrested in Baseco, about 2 weeks since Manila Mayor Isko Moreno ordered an anti-criminality crackdown in the area.
Some 50 grams of illegal drugs, 63 illegal firearms, 4 grenades and 159 bullets were seized during the operations, data from the Manila Police District showed.
Fifteen illegal gambling machines were also seized from Baseco.
Recommendations to suspend barangay officials in Baseco have been submitted to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Moreno said in a press conference.
“Asan ang mga opisyal ng barangay? Dalawa lang yan - wala kang pakialam o nakikinabang ka sa illegal activities na ito,” he said.
(Where are the barangay officials? Either you don't care or you benefit from these illegal activities.)
“Puro ilegal [sa Baseco], pati kuryente ilegal,” he said.
Barangay officials who refuse to cooperate with the city government may be charged with malfeasance and other administrative charges, DILG Undersecretary Epimaco Densing said.
“The fact na nag-coordinate ng operation ang pulis at hindi nakisama ang barangay at maraming nahuli na ganito, ebidensya na yan,” he said.
Barangay officials who were cited in the city’s letter would be allowed to explain their side before the DILG rules on their cases, he said.
