MANILA - The local government of Manila is reimbursing the unpaid salaries of some 324 workers who were contracted by the previous city administration, Mayor Isko Moreno said Thursday.
Most of these employees were hired as job order workers in February 2019 but have yet to receive their salaries, Moreno told reporters.
“Sila pinangakuan magtrabaho sa city hall, but they were utilized somewhere else,” he said.
“Despite na sila ay ginamit laban sa akin... kahit na sila ay namulitika, ginamit saan-saan, one thing is for sure, I will give them what is due to them,” he said.
Moreno refused to categorically state if the workers served as campaign volunteers of former Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada.
The city government will spend some P1.65 million in the first tranche of reimbursement, Manila Public Information Office chief Julius Leonen said.
The amount would vary in succeeding tranches because the duration of their contracts differ, some were hired for 3 months while others for 5 months, he said.
“Bilang ama ng lungsod at sila ay aking nasasakupan, the least thing that I can do for them is ibigay kung ano ang nararapat para sa kanila,” Moreno said.
“Pinagtrabahuhan nila ito, dapat sila ay bayaran,” he said.
