MANILA—The number of residents who were injured after a pair of moderately strong earthquakes hit Itbayat town, Batanes, on Saturday is now at 100, the provincial governor said.

The death toll remained at 8 at the time this story was posted.

Asked if she will declare a state of calamity in the province, Gov. Marilou Cayco said she is "considering" it.

"Tingnan muna namin . . . How far 'yung nasira, 'yung napinsala doon. Then saka kami mag-meeting, para mag-declare kami ng state of calamity," Cayco told ANC.

(We'll see what the extent of the damage is, then we'll sit down and see whether we'll declare a state of calamity.)

Two earthquakes in the magnitude-5 range hit the northern islands on the same day. The first one registered at 5.4 struck at 4:16 a.m. at a depth of 12 km northeast of Itbayat town.

Three hours later, a second one at magnitude-5.9 struck at about 19 km off Itbayat.

Several aftershocks followed, the Phivolcs said, but were mostly inconsequential.
