MANILA -- Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano said it was "good to be on guard" ahead of a House of Representatives vote that might see him elected as leader of the chamber on Monday, hours before President Rodrigo Duterte delivers his State of the Nation Address.

Duterte's eldest son, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, earlier said there could be a "coup d'etat" for the House leadership even as the chief executive said a compromise had been reached.

"It's always good to be on guard. It's a democracy, meaning anyone can suddenly say tatakbo ako (I will run for Speaker). There are many very, very popular congressmen and congresswomen. Anyone of them can suddenly run," Cayetano told reporters.

"But as I said, we're trying to reach out. I think we formed a consensus, but I don't want to speak ahead of turn so let's wait kung anong mangyayari ng (for what will happen at) 10 o'clock," he added.

Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco have agreed to split the 3-year Speaker term. Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, another former contender for the Speakership, will be the majority leader.

Rep. Duterte, meanwhile, has agreed to become deputy speaker, Cayetano claimed Friday.

He and Cayetano were set to hold separate breakfast meetings on Monday.
