MANILA - The public is encouraged to report “arrogant” police officers in quarantine checkpoints, the country’s COVID-19 joint task force said, promising a crackdown on such cops.
Joint Task Force COVID Shield Commander Guillermo Eleazar said erring cops will be dealt with through administrative and criminal charges should complainants choose to file cases.
“Administratively, puwede po ‘yang matanggal sa serbisyo depende kung masu-suspend iyan, at kung may criminal case na related sa kaniyang violation, puwede pong makulong 'yan… Definitely hindi 'yan tino-tolerate,” Eleazar said in a press briefing aired on state television.
(Administratively they can be removed from service. It depends too whether or not they will get suspended and when the complainants choose to file cases, depending on whatever these cops violated, they can be put to jail. Definitely, this will not be tolerated.)
Eleazar maintained that they are also monitoring social media for any complaints regarding checkpoints they could act upon, and reiterated that abuses made among their ranks would not be tolerated.
“More than ever ang social media importante 'yan pero magtiwala tayo, hindi kinukunsinti ng PNP ang kalokohan ng sino man sa ating hanay,” Eleazar said.
(More than ever, social media is important. Trust us when we say the Philippine National Police does not tolerate this foolishness from anyone in our ranks.)
"Nagche-check kami sa social media, sa media at ang ating police… Talagang hindi ito tinotolerate,” he later added.
(We check social media, the media and the police. Definitely we do not tolerate this.)
Since the pandemic started, police checkpoints have been set up around borders of provinces and cities to limit movement and avoid coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) contamination.
