AGOO, La Union - Slain former La Union Rep. Eufranio Eriguel was laid to rest at the Agoo Public Cemetery on Saturday morning.
Security was tight as Eriguel was buried past 11 a.m. surrounded by family, friends and supporters.
Mourners also released white balloons while a helicopter dropped confetti at the cemetery.
A funeral mass was first held at the Agoo Basilica attended by his family and supporters.
While at the church, Eriguel's wife Sandra, the incumbent representative of La Union's 2nd District, and their daughter, Agoo Mayor Stephanie Ann Eriguel, thanked the people for their support and sympathies.
They said they lost a great leader and a good father and that Eriguel will be greatly missed.
On Thursday, thousands of residents from the 10 towns of the province's 2nd District also took part in a prayer rally for their slain former representative.
Eriguel was gunned down on May 12 while giving a speech at the general assembly of candidates running for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in Barangay Capas, Agoo town. Two civilian bodyguards were also killed.
Authorities arrested Felizardo “Rambo” Villanueva in connection with Eriguel’s killing. Villanueva ran but lost in the barangay elections.
Eriguel was on the list of alleged "drug coddlers" from local government units who President Rodrigo Duterte identified in August 2016.
