MANILA (UPDATED) -- The mayor of Pantao Ragat in Lanao del Norte province survived an ambush Sunday which left 4 dead and wounded 3 others.
Mayor Lacson Lantud said he was on his way to a project site when they were ambushed by unidentified armed men in Brgy. Cabasagan at 8 a.m.
Barangay chairman Kalic Disamburun and a certain Tarapas were killed during the ambush. A policeman identified only as PO1 Macalaba died while being brought to a hospital.
Casanuding Hasim, on the other hand, was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The wounded, identified as Parmon Macarimbang, Acmad Magumnang and PO1 Mangonte, are now being treated in a hospital.
According to Lantud, armed men suddenly appeared at the roadside and fired at them. Lantud, who was behind the steering wheel, kept driving until they reached a safe distance.
"Akala ko talaga marami na akong tama, 'di ko lang maramdaman. 'Di na ako huminto kasi mamatay kami lahat," he said.
(I thought I had been hit and I just couldn't feel them. I didn't stop because we would all be killed.)
Lantud refused to name who he thinks was behind the ambush but hinted that it could be politically motivated.
This is the third attempt on Lantud's life since 2010.
Acting Chief of Police Sr. Insp. Rector Iwangan said the motive may be rido or clan feud. -- Report from Roxanne Arevalo
