MANILA- Local government units in Visayas and Mindanao can declare local community quarantines or lockdowns, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Wednesday.
Local officials of areas not covered by the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon just have to coordinate with the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Department of Health on their decisions.
"For areas outside Luzon, such as regions in Mindanao and the Visayas, local government units have the discretion to implement ECQs (enhanced community quarantines) if they deem it necessary," Nograles said in a virtual press briefing.
Luzon has been on lockdown since March 17 as the government sought to arrest the spread of COVID-19. The lockdown, which was supposed to end on April 12, was extended until April 30.
Several areas outside Luzon have also implemented local community quarantines as people were told to stay home to control the spread of COVID-19.
The Philippines is in a state of public health emergency and calamity over COVID-19 that has spread out of its origin, China, to nearly 200 countries and territories since it was first detected late last year.
As of Tuesday, the country has recorded a total of 3,764 cases of COVID-19, including 177 deaths and 84 recoveries.
