MANILA - United States President Donald Trump has invited President Rodrigo Duterte to attend a summit between the US and the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The summit is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas on March 4, 2020.
According to the Presidential Communications Operations Office, Trump first invited the ASEAN leaders during the ASEAN Summit in Bangkok last November.
The US then reiterated its invitation through a letter dated Jan. 9, 2020.
This is not the first time Trump has invited Duterte to visit the US. In 2016, then-presidential aide Christopher "Bong" Go revealed Trump called Duterte and invited him to the White House.
In 2017, the White House again invited Duterte "to discuss the importance of the United States-Philippines alliance."
"The meeting between Duterte and Trump is expected to reaffirm the longstanding alliance between the Philippines and [the] US," PCOO said in a statement.
The invitation comes amid recent legislation banning all Philippine officials involved in the arrest and detention of Sen. Leila de Lima.
