It looked effortless, but did you know that Gray initially struggled – to the point of “crying in pain” – because of scoliosis?

This was the revelation of Miss Grand International 2016 first runner-up Nicole Cordoves, who served as one of Gray’s mentors in her Miss Universe 2018 journey.

In an interview on “Tonight with Boy Abunda” on Monday, Cordoves recalled: “[She practiced the slow-mo twirl] with Carlos Buendia Jr., Kuya Caloy. At may scolio siya, Tito Boy, so ‘yung first few practices niya, talagang umiiyak siya.”

“Kasi ‘yung posture pa lang na you’re going to pull yourself para straight na straight ‘yung body mo and you get the curves, ang hirap para sa kanya.”

She mentioned Gray’s scoliosis again in her article in Manila Bulletin published on Tuesday, saying: “It was also to Kuya Caloy that Catriona cried in pain because of her scoliosis that has become her bane during past related trainings.”

“With her scoliosis, Catriona couldn’t really fit into what society can describe as ‘sexy’ where one would see deep curves and the evident absence of a Venus pouch that’s inherent in every woman. But she taught critics a lesson or two about the standards of beauty and being your best self,” she added.

Gray’s efforts paid off as she was crowned Miss Universe 2018, making her the country’s fourth titleholder after Pia Wurtzbach (2015), Margie Moran (1973), and Gloria Diaz (1969).
