MANILA – Staying true to her vision of promoting the Philippines, Catriona Gray wore a dress inspired by her hometown during the evening gown competition of Miss Universe 2018.

Gray made this revelation during a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday, shortly after she was crowned Miss Universe.

“This was inspired by Mt. Mayon. Mt. Mayon is a famous volcano located in my hometown in Albay, Bicol region in the Philippines,” she said.

“It’s known because it’s a perfect cone shape. That’s where we drew inspiration from, that magma.”

Gray’s dress complemented her signature “lava walk” during the pageant, and helped her stand out in a sea of silver dresses during the competition.

Designer Mak Tumang said he proposed the idea for the dress early this year, right after Gray was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2018.

“It’s amazing, she’s very hardworking and very passionate,” said Tumang, who also executed Gray’s nationalistic vision through her dresses in Binibining Pilipinas and the preliminary competition of Miss Universe.

“I’m very, very happy [that she won],” he added.
