“Alas ng Bayan: Women, Heroism and Memory” opened at Constantino Foundation Linangan Gallery in Quezon City, Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019.

It showcases five women in different chapters of Philippine history who fought for various issues but shared a common trait — the courage to fight for their rights.

The exhibit aims to offer approaches to history and feminism that wants to enable young people to respond to the worsening state of national forgetting and the climate crisis.

Those featured were KKK's Gregoria de Jesus, President Macario Sakay's Apolonia Catra, Hukbalahap's 'Kumander Liwayway' Remedios Gomez-Paraiso, martial law activist Lorena Barros, and environment activist and human rights defender Gloria Capitan, who was assassinated on the day President Duterte was sworn into office, being the first recorded extra-judicial killing under his watch.

Red Constantino said the exhibit aims to remind society, especially the younger generation, how the women who went before them stood up and fought oppression.

“The challenge to young people today especially women is not only to fight national oppression, but to end the reign of toxic masculinity and corrosive machismo.” Constantino said.

“Alas ng Bayan” will be launched officially on Monday, Nov. 25, at the Asean Hall, Asian Center in UP Diliman and will run until Wednesday, Nov. 27.
