MANILA -- Bea Patricia “Patch” Magtanong, the Philippines’ bet in the 2019 Miss International pageant, remains grateful for being able to deliver her speech in the competition, which focused on women empowerment.
On Saturday, Magtanong posted on Instagram a video of her speech during the pageant’s coronation, held on Nov. 12 in Tokyo, Japan.
Reflecting on her experience of being able to join Miss International, Magtanong, who finished in the Top 8, wrote in the caption: “I’m so grateful to have had the chance to speak about my truth, and the truth of all women who have had limitations placed on them based on their gender.”
“It’s not everyday you are given a huge platform to speak about something you care deeply about! To @missinternationalofficial, thank you!” she added, tagging the pageant’s official Instagram page.
Aside from winning, Magtanong said her goal in the pageant “was to deliver an excellent speech upon reaching the Top 8.”
“I knew that once I delivered my speech, I would have already done everything within my power, and it would be up to fate or luck whether or not I would get the crown,” she said.
Magtanong also thanked those who supported her Miss International bid.
“To be a Miss Philippines has been the greatest experience of my life, thank you for letting me represent you,” she said.
In her speech, Magtanong recounted that she grew up being subjected to “different standards as other boys my age,” which she began to question and challenge when she became a lawyer.
The Philippine bet went on to stress that women should be able to live without fear of harassment and be allowed to realize their full potential.
