MANILA (UPDATE) -- The wait for the first Filipina winner of the Miss Grand International pageant continues after Samantha Lo, a 26-year-old nursing graduate, bowed out early during a crowning ceremony held in Venezuela on Saturday (Manila time).
Lo, who brought a Tausug-inspired national costume to the contest, failed to make the top 20.
In her official profile, Lo, who was raised in Florida before moving to Manila when she turned 22, said that her main advocacy is to raise awareness about the need for a proper program to address mental health needs of people rescued after a natural disaster.
She almost did not make it to the Miss Grand International contest after having issues with her travel documents. She left the country on October 9, but only arrived in Venezuela last October 20.
Host country Venezuela took home the crown, while Mexico placed 1st runner up, followed by Thailand, Panama, and Brazil.
