MANILA – Newly crowned Miss Universe Catriona Gray hopes to disprove the notion that beauty queens are “not relatable.”

In an interview with AP Entertainment published online on Friday (Manila time), Gray stressed that she and her fellow pageant titleholders are “just normal girls” with an “amazing platform.”

“I feel like a lot of people don’t find us very relatable when we say we’re beauty queens – which is something, as a Miss Universe, I want to kind of abolish,” she said.

She continued: “We are just normal girls. We do extraordinary jobs and have an amazing platform, but underneath all that, we are normal people, and we can be approached. You can come talk to us.”

Gray is the Philippines’ fourth Miss Universe winner after Pia Wurtzbach (2015), Margie Moran (1973), and Gloria Diaz (1969).

Since being crowned Miss Universe, she has amassed over four million followers on Instagram – which Gray said she wants to use “to educate people and create awareness” on various causes such as children’s education.

“So many people are listening to what I have to say… [I want to] do something more than just show them a cute outfit or what I’m having for lunch,” she said in an interview at Build Series in New York last Wednesday.
