Last year, a young filmmaker burst onto the scene with an exciting indie called "Birdshot," about a girl who unwittingly kills an endangered bird and an idealistic rookie cop who spirals into a heartless brutal executioner.
It won Best Picture at the Asian Future Film Competition of the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival, and is now the country's official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2018 Academy Awards.
That young filmmaker is Mikhail Red, who is back this year with another new feature, "Neomanila."
To premiere as part of the QCinema International Film Festival 2017 later this month, it is about an orphaned teen who becomes part of a notorious death squad.
Set in present day Manila, "Neomanila," as the official description reads, "provides a closer look on the violent war on drugs waged" in the country.
