MANILA (UPDATE)-- President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency director general Aaron Aquino to the Clark International Airport Corporation Board of Directors, Malacañang said Wednesday.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said Aquino was appointed to the post last May 22.

The former PDEA chief was also nominated by the Palace as president and CEO of the Clark Airport, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said.

The announcement of Aquino's transfer came after the Palace said he would be replaced by Wilkins Villanueva as the new PDEA director-general

Roque told ANC Aquino's transfer was "not a case of loss of trust and confidence," adding, "he will be just given a new assignment."

Aquino on Tuesday thanked PDEA's staff for "their support to my leadership and dedication to the agency."
