MANILA -- Smartphone titan Vivo officially launched its multi-year partnership with NBA Philippines.

Aside from bringing groundbreaking experiences to sports fans in the country, the collaboration will also serve as a platform for generating more awareness on Vivo smartphones.

The positive outlook of the organizations were expressed by Vivo PH CEO Ted Xiong and NBA Philippines Managing Director Carlo Singson.

"We are excited to partner with the NBA, who share our core values of teamwork, respect, and community. The popularity of the NBA will enhance our brand image and introduce our mobile devices to more users, and we look forward to working with the league to create experiences for fans to enjoy the game," remarked Xiong.

Singson relayed a similar sentiment by saying, "Vivo is the ideal partner for us to deliver new ways for fans in the Philippines to experience the NBA right at their fingertips. With innovation at the forefront of Vivo's products and services, we look forward to integrating Vivo into our local events and global platforms through content creation and activations that will engage the modern Filipino fan."

Pushing for constant innovation

Vivo now continues to focus its efforts on its flagship series, NEX. The lineup is known for introducing a myriad of 'industry firsts' as well as substantial improvements from previous generations of smartphones.

Vivo NEX smartphones are fitted with the cutting-edge Ultra FullView™ Display, a notchless screen which occupies almost the entire front face of each NEX smartphone. This design language allows the OEM to create extremely thin bezels, and gives the maximum possible screen-body ratio.

NEX smartphones also sport an In-Display Fingerprint Scanning capability. The sensor is embedded under the screen, eliminating the need to consciously place a designated finger on a specific button of the device.

And to remove the notch on the screen altogether, Vivo has succeeded in creating another revolutionary feature for NEX smartphones, the Elevating Front Camera. It was unveiled as a critical component of the the first two NEX smartphones, NEX (NEX S/NEX Special Edition/NEX Ultimate in some countries) and NEX A, which were both released last June 2018.

The front camera is housed under the display, and mechanically pops up in just 1 second when the user wants to take selfies. Making it work requires a combination of a micro-stepping motor, an independent driver integrated circuit, and a precision control algorithm. Along with a dynamic sound effect as the camera elevates, this blend of seamless aesthetics with clockwork precision is almost like magic. The Elevating Front Camera has since become a defining feature of the first gen NEX smartphones.

A new technological wonder

The new device in the lineup, the NEX Dual Display Edition AKA NEX 2, was launched last month at an event in China. Albeit it doesn't come with the Elevating Front Camera, Vivo's latest offering still has plenty of things to be excited about.

The NEX Dual Display Edition is set to unveil more 'industry firsts', most notably the eponymous dual display. In addition to the front screen, the smartphone also has a rear display.

Two times the viewing experience

The dual screen design provides new capabilities mainly in terms of functionality. At the front of the device is the company's signature Ultra FullView™ Display, with an impressive screen-body ratio of 91.63%.

The back of the smartphone, meanwhile, is fitted with a 5.49-inch Super AMOLED display, which gives extra flexibility in using the gadget's other features. Taking high resolution selfies is now possible with the rear cameras and screen. This characteristic brings advantages in video chatting and sharing media content as well.

The rear part also has Vivo's Lunar Ring that lights up in different colors for personalizing notifications and pulses while playing music. It also serves as diffusion lighting touted as Selfie Softlight.

Three times the image capture power

The NEX Dual Display Edition boasts a triple camera setup, and the 12MP main camera comes equipped with a Sony IMX363 sensor and 4-axis OIS, allowing the user to quickly shoot photos without sacrificing quality. The second is a Night Video Camera which ensures image clarity even in low-light conditions.

But the crown jewel in the setup is the time-of-flight (TOF) 3D camera. This capability calculates the distance between the device and the subject of the image based on the speed of light produced by the illumination of the LED or flash. A TOF camera can capture up to 160 images per second of the subject and its surroundings, then combine them to produce one hyper-realistic photo. It also doubles as a component for security by allowing 3D modeling that is vital for the smartphone's facial recognition system.

On the software side, the NEX Dual Display Edition has additional camera modes like Pose Director and Mirror Mode for more practical and fun photo sessions. The former projects a posed image on the rear display to serve as reference, while the latter allows users to see themselves on the screen as they are photographed or filmed. These come along with other modes like AI Scene Recognition, AI Filters and AI Portrait Framing.

Mighty control center

At the backend of the abovementioned capabilities lie a strong core, centered on the current top of the line chipset, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, in both NEX S and NEX Dual Display (Snapdragon 710 in NEX A). The processor is supported by 6/8/10 GB RAM for NEX A, NEX S, and NEX Dual Display, respectively. With 128 GB ROM in all variants (and NEX S also having a 256 GB version), everything from single-app usage to multi-tasking is fast and efficient.

Along with the other NEX models, the NEX Dual Display Edition is another testament to Vivo's commitment in bringing innovation to its audience.

Spark Ni, Senior Vice-President of Vivo Global, relayed the company's excitement for their upcoming high-end smartphone.

"As Vivo's premium line-up, the NEX series offers not only an extraordinary user experience to consumers, it also unleashes our imagination towards the future of design and development of smartphones. Combining a futuristic dual-display design and innovative technologies, NEX Dual Display Edition demonstrates Vivo’s continuous exploration and pursuit of exceptional innovations for consumers," Ni stated.
