Narrower lanes in EDSA could ease chronic traffic jams, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Thursday.

EDSA lanes are 3.4 meters wide and can be downsized to 2.8 meters, the ideal width for roads with a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour, MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said, citing a Japanese study.

With narrower tracks, there will be enough space for a 6th lane on parts of EDSA, which can be assigned to motorcycles or vehicles to make a U-turn, he told radio DZMM.

The MMDA is still ironing where the measure dubbed "road diet" can be implemented. The agency is also checking if funds for this were included in the 2019 national budget, he said.
