The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday said it would review the Ateneo de Manila University's dismissal of a junior high school student who was caught in a viral video assaulting his peer.

"Automatic iyan na kailangan... Sinulatan namin agad ang Ateneo to explain and report kung ano ang nangyari, which will be the basis also of our action para sabihin na tama o hindi iyang ginawa nila," Education Secretary Leonor Briones said in an interview on DZMM radio.

(It's automatic that that's necessary... We immediately wrote to Ateneo to explain and report what happened, which will be the basis also of our action to rule on whether what they did was right or wrong.)

"Kailangan tingnan namin nang husto iyung basis ng kanilang desisyon," she added.

(We have to closely examine the basis of their decision.)

The school may be held liable if proven that it committed negligence during the incident, said Briones.

The review, she added, would cover the possible liability of the person who took the video, which captured a student punching and kicking his schoolmate inside a school restroom.

The aggressor was dismissed from Ateneo after "a thorough investigation that included listening to all the parties involved," school president Jose Ramon Villarin SJ said Sunday.

The Jesuit-run school, he said, would continue its investigation "as there are other matters involved."
