MANILA - Wednesday's magnitude 6.3 tremor in Mindanao should be a wake-up call to local government units to take earthquake drills seriously, the country's top seismologist said.

Undersecretary Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said national simultaneous drills are meant to orient LGUs on what to do during an event of a big earthquake.

"Wake-up call ito sa mga LGU na hindi pinapansin ang mga earthquake drill kasi maliban po sa main island ng Palawan na malayo sa earthquake generator, lahat po ng lugar sa Pilipinas ay malapit sa earthquake generator or fault na pwedeng maapektuhan ng lindol," Solidum said.

The magnitude 6.3 tremor struck about 22 kilometers southeast of Tulunan, North Cotabato at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday, leaving at least 4 dead and 60 injured across Mindanao.

The quake was felt in almost the entire Mindanao island, he said.

"Doon po malapit sa epicenter, ilang bayan ng Cotabato, then ilang bayan ng Sultan Kudarat at Davao del Sur merong significant shaking na may konting damages," he said.
