The House of Representatives will investigate the closure of a runway at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which stranded thousands of passengers over the weekend.

Authorities shuttered the runway from late Thursday to Saturday noon after the left engine of a Xiamen Airlines Boeing 737 was ripped off during a bumpy landing.

The House inquiry will look into protocols in responding to such incidents, Catanduanes Rep. Cesar Sarmiento, who chairs the transportation panel, said Monday.

Sarmiento also urged authorities to upgrade airports outside Metro Manila to ease the strain on NAIA, which accommodates some 42 million travelers every year, above its 30 million passenger capacity.

In a separate interview with reporters, Sarmiento said he instructed his staff to prepare the notice for a hearing scheduled Sept. 5.

Senator Grace Poe, chair of the Senate public service committee, earlier said she would also file a resolution on Monday directing her panel to investigate the issue.
