Endgame: Otso Diretso campaign manager hopes for surprise finish in May polls
MANILA - The Otso Diretso senatorial slate can still win seats in the upcoming elections even if only 2 of them make it to the winning circle based on recent surveys, the team's campaign manager said Wednesday.
Early preference surveys have been wrong before and some people who were not in the Top 12 eventually won, said Otso Diretso campaign manager Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan.
"Naniniwala tayo that this will be an opportunity for us also, for this election na magkaroon ng come from behind surprise finish," he told ANC's Early Edition.
(We believe this will be an opportunity for us, for this election to have a come from behind surprise finish.)
"Ang pinakamahalagang survey 'yung araw ng halalan mismo, and we have 5 more days before elections. We’re going all out. Nararamdaman din natin ang gigil ng pagsuporta sa ating mga kandidato…We are not giving up…This is the final endgame salvo," he said.
(The most important survey is on election day itself and we have 5 more days before elections. We're going all out. We also feel the desire of our supporters for the candidates. We are not giving up. This is the final endgame salvo.)
The team is releasing its last stretch of television advertisements for the entire slate and distributing "kodigo" or cheat sheets which voters can bring to their precincts on election day, said Pangilinan.
He said they had to "bite the bullet" and push for slate advertisements instead of individual infomercials, which would have cost around P70,000 to P100,000, due to "limited resources."
Only Sen. Bam Aquino and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas cracked the winner's circle, though inconsistently, in recent Pulse Asia surveys.
Pangilinan said Chel Diokno, Gary Alejano, Florin Hilbay, Samira Gutoc, Romulo Macalintal, and Erin Tañada were offered as choices to the voters because they have not been linked to corruption.
"In the end, magtitiwala tayo sa taongbayan. 'Yun naman talaga ang esensya ng demokrasya. So ipaglalaban natin ito hanggang dulo. Sabi nga nila, no retreat, no surrender. We will push for the 8 candidates until the very end," he said.
(In the end, we will trust the people. That is the essence of democracy. So we will fight for this to the very end. As they say, no retreat, no surrender. We will push for the 8 candidates until the very end.
