MANILA - Two regions in Mindanao will experience scattered rains on Sunday as a tropical depression off the country's Pacific coast moved closer to the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said.

At 3 a.m., the storm was 1,175 kilometers east of Mindanao, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and 60 kph gusts, said PAGASA weather specialist Meno Mendoza. It will enter PAR on Sunday, he told radio DZMM.

The tropical depression's trough or extension will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Caraga and Davao regions, PAGASA said in an advisory.

The storm may make landfall in eastern Mindanao, but may also weaken as it approaches land, said Mendoza.

The amihan or northeast monsoon, meanwhile, will bring light rains over Batanes, Cagayan and Isabela provinces, PAGASA said.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains, the weather agency added.
