A nearly 2-month lack of rain in Occidental Mindoro has caused some P31 million worth of agricultural damage in the province, the local disaster office said Wednesday.

"Simula Enero at hanggang sa kasalukuyan po, talaga pong medyo hindi pa tayo napagkakalooban ng ulan at maaaring ito po ang naging sanhi ng pagkatuyo ng ilang mga pananim at sakahan," said disaster office head Mario Mulingbayan.

(Since January, we have not been blessed with rain and this may be why some crops and fields dried up.)

The shortage of rain is affecting 11 towns, the worst hit of which were Calintaan, Sablayan, San Jose and Sta. Cruz, he said.

The local government is providing subsidy to farmers's fuel expenses for water pumps and wells, said Mulingbayan.

The provincial agricultural office on Tuesday also gave "positive feedback" on a proposed cloud seeding operation to trigger rains, he said.

A weak El Niño, a weather pattern associated with reduced rainfall, is currently affecting the Philippines, state meteorology bureau PAGASA said last week.
