Manila Water, which services the east zone of Metro Manila, denied Friday that there will be a 780-percent increase in water rates after it was slapped with massive fines for violating an environmental law.

A Philippine Star reporter earlier said water rates might jump to P26.70 if a Supreme Court decision fining water concessionaires P921.5 million is not reversed.

The 780-percent increase included in Manila Water's motion for reconsideration against the ruling "is what it would have cost to build wastewater facilities to comply with the Clean Water Act," said Manila Water Corporate Communications Head Jeric Sevilla.

"We never stated that it will be an impending increase nor did we make any statement about passing on to consumers," he added.

Lawmakers from the left-wing Makabayan bloc will file a resolution seeking a House inquiry into the issue, Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate earlier said.
