MANILA -- Huawei has applied for a trademark for its own operating system in place of Google's Android in at least 9 countries and the European Union.

Google will stop support for future Huawei devices starting in August in compliance with the US government's blacklisting of the Shenzhen-based firm, the world's second largest smartphone maker after Samsung.

Codenamed "HongMeng," the OS "will gradually replace the Android system", China's state-owned Global Times said in late May.

Huawei, also the world's largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, has repeatedly denied Washington's allegation that it was providing a backdoor for Chinese spies.
