MANILA -- Crowd attendance during Christmas Day’s doubleheader at the Philippine Arena was lower than expected.

The games between NLEX and GlobalPort and Ginebra and Magnolia was supposed to fill up the 50,000-seater arena in Bocaue on Christmas Day, but only 22,531 spectators -- or less than half the venue's capacity -- turned up to watch the matches.

This was a far cry from the 54,000 record attendance during the deciding Game 7 between Ginebra and Meralco in the recent Governors’ Cup.

But incoming PBA officer-in-charge Willie Marcial pointed out that the long holiday weekend may have affected the Christmas twinbill.

“Friday kasi bakasyon na until tomorrow (December 26), which was declared a special holiday. So karamihan talaga ang balik na sa January 2,” Marcial told website Spin.
