MANILA, Philippines -- La Salle-Dasmariñas recovered from a third set letdown to overcome Colegio San Agustin (CSA)-Biñan in four sets and conclude its campaign in the 2018 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Collegiate Grand Slam on a high note.
The Lady Patriots claimed a 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16 victory over the Eagles on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena, thus finishing with a 1-4 win-loss record.
The Eagles, who claimed a shock five-set win over Far Eastern University (FEU) earlier in the tournament, also finished with a 1-4 slate.
"Hindi kami nakaka-set sa mga malalakas na team sa UAAP. Pero sabi ko, sa CSA, sana mailabas na nila, kasi kumbaga sa level sa south, ka-level lang namin sila sa mga liga," said La Salle-Dasmariñas coach Joven Racelis. "So, ayun, ngayon ko nakita 'yung inensayo namin."
La Salle-Dasmariñas surged to a 2-0 lead but fell prey to its own miscues in the third set, allowing the Eagles to push ahead, 20-15. CSA-Biñan made it 23-19 off a kill by Lency Duarte, before back-to-back miscues by the Eagles gave the Lady Patriots some hope.
The Eagles held on, however, thanks to another kill by Duarte and an attack error by La Salle's Jubilee del Rosario.
"Sa third set sabi ko sa kanila, 'yung pinaghirapan niyo ng first set, ng second set, 'yung inensayo natin, kung magpapatalo kayo ng fourth set, may tendency na matalo tayo, so mababalewala lahat ng pinaghirapan natin," said Racelis.
"Sabi ko kung ano ginawa ng first set, ng second set, balik tayo dun sa first set, second set," he added.
The Lady Patriots recovered in the fourth set, thanks to Eunice Castillo. After the Eagles came to within three points, 12-9, La Salle-Dasmariñas scored 9 unanswered points, the last four coming off service aces by Castillo.
That gave La Salle-Dasmariñas a 21-9 lead, and they never looked back.
Castillo finished with 16 points, six of which came off aces. Cyrille Ramos and Basilyn Delfin each had 14 markers for the Lady Patriots, who pounced on 40 errors from the Eagles.
Aliah Marce led CSA with 14 points, while Duarte had 13.
