MANILA, Philippines – The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) commended the Philippine men's and women's basketball teams on Tuesday, after they completed a gold medal sweep in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
The Gilas Pilipinas Women put on their best performance of the competition in a 91-71 rout of Thailand en route to their first-ever SEA Games gold medal.
The men's team, meanwhile, lived up to all expectations and crushed Thailand, 115-81, in the final for its 18th SEA Games gold.
"For the first time in history, our Filipina basketball players are queens of the Southeast Asian Games," SBP president Al Panlilio said in a statement.
"The SBP congratulates coach Patrick Aquino and all the members of the team as this is surely the fitting reward to the hard work that they have put in throughout the years," he added.
"We also thank the countless individuals who have invested in Philippine women’s basketball from the beginning as this success is also built from their sacrifices."
Panlilio expressed his confidence that the SEA Games gold is "just the beginning" for the Gilas Women as well.
The victory of the men's and women's teams in the 5-on-5 competition completed the Philippines' four-gold sweep of the basketball events in the SEA Games. They had earlier triumphed in the 3x3 competition, which was being held for the first time in the biennial tournament.
"Four gold medals for the Philippines in basketball capped by another dominant run by our Gilas Pilipinas Men team," said Panlilio.
Panlilio expressed his gratitude to the PBA board and commissioner Willie Marcial, who released the players so that Tim Cone could form "the best team" possible.
"Congratulations to all the members of the team for this flawless performance and to all Filipino basketball fans, we thank you for the support, and we hope we made you proud," he added.
