CAPAS, Tarlac—Melvin Calano of the Philippines won the gold medal in Southeast Asian Games men's javelin throw at New Clark City's Athletics Stadium here on Monday.

Calano hurled a distance of 72.86 meters in his first attempt to beat Indonesia's Hafiz Abd (silver) and Vietnam's Van Nguyen (bronze).

It was the Filipinos' eighth gold medal in track and field in these SEA Games.

"Ang pumasok po sa isip ko, hindi ko ito gawa kundi gawa ito ng Diyos. Siya ang nagbigay ng kalakasan. Di ko sinosolo ang tagumpay na ito," Calano said.

The win came after his house in Camarines Norte was damaged by a tornado amid typhoon Tisoy.

"Six days before the competition may bagyo tapos sa Bicol tumama. 'Yung bahay namin tinamaan ng ipo ipo, lumipad lahat ng bubong. Hindi naman ako nalungkot kasi inihanda ako ng Diyos sa ganoon," he said.
