MANILA—About a month ago at the World Electronic Sports Games, Cav “EnDerr” Acampado was reeling from a qualifier loss to Tran “MeomaikA” Hong Phuc of Vietnam in the Starcraft II Southeast Asian division.
But if one looks at Acampado's upper bracket win against Tran in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Friday as avenging a 3-1 loss in their November meeting, the Filipino gamer wants to quash the notion.
“Close friend ko ang kalaban ko, and hindi naman ganoon ka-intense ’yung laro,” Acampado told reporters Friday.
(My opponent is a close friend of mine, and besides the match was not so intense.)
As Tran was relegated to the lower bracket finals, Acampado, who played a "mirror match" against the Vietnamese player, still saw his “close friend” as a threat on the field as Tran forced a rubber match and even got close to defeating Acampado.
“I think ’yung Vietnam lang talaga ’yung threat pero may malalakas din talaga tulad ng Singapore and Malaysia,” he said ahead of the lower bracket finals, where Tran faced Singapore's Thomas "Blysk" Kopankiewicz.
Kopankiewicz, however, sent Tran packing with a 3-1 win, with Vietnam squandering a twice-to-beat advantage nearing a finals berth.
Acampado will try to complete his bid for SEA Games gold against Kopankiewicz on Monday, December 10, at FilOil Flying V Center.
